Son textos de caràcter històrico y espiritual, provenientes de los antiguos libros escritos geroglificamente. Otra parte de estos textos ha sido recopilada de fuente oral.
Chilam es un tìtulo que se le daba a la clase de personas que interpretaba los libros, el mensaje y voluntad de los Dioses. Balam es un nombre de familia que significa jaguar.
Chilam Balam predijo la llegada de una nueva religiòn poco antes de la llegada de los españoles a nuestras tierras.

Los invasores enseñaron la sumisiòn por medio del temor imponiendo la nueva cultura y religion. Y el aceptarla fuè tambien una estrategia de sobrevivencia.
