El sombrero es una prenda aportada por los españoles que se ha modificado para la clase pudiente y generalizado entre los labradores y artesanos. Atravès de las dècadas fuè cambiando tanto el sombrero de fieltro de ala ancha utilizado en el invierno europeo; hasta el sombrero de palma, utilizado en el verano en Europa.
Estuvieron de moda en el siglo XIX y principios del siglo XX, recibiendo el nombre de panderete.
El sombrero fuè adoptado por los Mayas guatemaltecos, especialmente el de copa alta y ala corta pintados de negro, los cuales son utilizados por los cofrades.
Algunos sombreros se decoran con listones, algunos bordados con flores. Se usan diariamente, de forma ceremonial y para festejos especiales.
